Musikkfest Oslo (MFO) het tidligere Musikkens Dag og har sitt opphav i det franske arrangementet Fête de la Musique. Verdens største internasjonale musikkfestival ble unnfanget under Jack Lange i 1982, daværende kulturminister i Frankrike. Arrangementet kom til Norge etter initiativ fra Oslo kommune i 1992.

Fête de la Musique, National Music Day, eller Musikkfest finnes nå i mer enn 100 land på verdensbasis. Fellesnevnere er at musikken stort sett er utendørs, artistene opptrer vederlagsfritt og alt er gratis for publikum. For å formelt være en del av av Fete de la Musique forutsettes det at arrangementet er den 21. juni. Dette har vist seg vanskelig i Norge, bl.a på grunn av vår ferieavvikling, samt at det har vært nødvendig å legge arrangementet til en helg. De siste årene har vi valgt å legge oss fast på den første lørdagen i juni. Selv om MFO er inspirert av Fete de la Musique er vi med andre ord allikevel formelt ikke en del av denne bevegelsen.

Vlatko Stefanovski, born in 1957, is Macedonian ethno-rock jazz fusion guitar player, who is well known for his incredible guitar technique. He creates rich soundscapes with imagination, fluency and ease.

Stefanovski started playing the guitar at the age of 13. In his late teens he formed the group LEB I SOL (BREAD AND SALT) which became one of the most important names in the music scene of former Yugoslavia. The band played a particular style of fusion music, a blend of Macedonian traditional irregular rhythms and contemporary rock.

For the past two decades, Stefanovski has developed a very successful solo career. Already his first solo release ‘Cowboys and Indians’ (1994) showcased his various interests, from deep ethno roots to ambient moods and classic blues.

During the last several years he has played and recorded all around the world with many top artists like Jan Akkerman, Bojan Z., Manu Katche, Toni Levin, Miroslav Tadic, Gibonni, Stefan Milenkovic, Kudsi Erguner, Theodosii Spassov and many others. His recent work also includes music for films, theatre and ballet. His latest release ‘Thunder from the Blue Sky’ is a magnificent blues record with guitar legend Jan Akkerman contributing his part and perfectly complementing the almost dizzying playing of the 6-string virtuoso from Macedonia. The extensive joint tour of the two exceptional guitarists through Southeast Europe in summer and autumn 2008 was an absolute triumph. In the spring of 2012 he will be touring Southeast Europe, as well as performing in Sweden, as the guitar super trio “Kings of strings”, together with Tommy Emmanuel and Stochelo Rosenberg.

Vlatko has performed as soloist with numerous symphony orchestras, such as: Tonkunstler orchestra from Vienna, Simphonieta orchestra from Sophia, Slovenian philharmonic orchestra – Ljubljana, Student symphony orchestra from Skopje – Macedonia. His Vlatko Stefanovski Trio has recently played in Macedonia, USA, Canada, UK, Austria, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, Bosnia i Hercegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria etc.

From musical patchwork to interwoven pop arrangement, La Cherga are fronted by high-powered frontwoman, Adisa Zvekic, who is using her extraordinary voice to lead the band into a new era. Their latest release, 2011′s ‘Revolve’, deals with transformations, renewals, and it also really does have a little to do with the continuation of the band’s own revolt against prevalent stereotypes. The grooving mixture of Eastern European jazz tradition, Jamaican and British dub rhythms, the loop-like arrangements of the Macedonian wind section and powerful, pop-friendly soul vocals – this is La Cherga anno 2012! At the same time they are not afraid to stir up these seemingly calm waters with in- your-face guitar riffs and driving drum ‘n’ bass breaks.

Their sound, frequently referred to as a patchwork, a style mix spanning dub, Balkan brass, jazz, drum ‘n’ bass and electronic is broadened on their “Revolve” album, to include funk and soul, laced with a dash of pop.

Always rooted in their home countries of Croatia, Bosnia, Macedonia and Jamaica, La Cherga remain true to themselves and continue to swim against the tide. Every note highlights their own individual interpretation of a post-pessimistic future on the international stage.

Excellent documentary about the Slovenian band martial-industrial Laibach (german word for Ljubljana, Slovenia). It depicts in pure “laibachian” style history of the group according to conditions of Slovenian history and political situation on the beginning of the 80′s. This film can be taken as a visual manifesto of retrogardist cultural movement called NSK (Neue slowenische Kunst – New Slovenian Art) presented here by Laibach. NSK is dealing with totalitarian principles of creating visual or performing art, containing rare footage of early Laibach events including suicidee vocalist Tomaž Hostnik (1961-1982). Also attacks on Laibach by members of the Yugoslavian Communist League, press, Socialist Youth and Partisan organisations are read out.

FORT PUNTA CHRISTO

Built in the eighteen hundreds, the stunning location looks like something from a lost world. Located on a peninsular surrounded by the ocean just across the bay from Pula, the venue is the perfect destination for sun-soaked daytime beach parties and on the water boat parties… When the sun sets however, the Fort will turn the festival into an entirely diferent beast…

THE MUSIC

With a higher technical specification of sound systems than you will find at any other festival of its size, Dimensions is the perfect place to enjoy the deep end of electronica, the best in techno, house, deep dubstep, drum & bass and other electronic sounds.

With chilled beats playing during the daytime beach sessions so you can relax and rejuvenate and with twice daily boat parties taking off from the harbour there is plenty to see and do.

ACCOMMODATION

For accommodation it’s possible to rent a private apartment or villa, stay in a holiday home, hotel, hostel or in the nearby campsite. Accommodation is relatively cheap in comparison to much of Europe.

The campsite is not your regular UK festival campsite. It operates as a family campsite year round so its very well stocked with all the amenities you will need and you can be certain that you are at the centre of the action, a very short walk from the festival site with the beach parties on your doorstep. This year you will also be able to hire tents so you don’t have to bring your own with you.

There is additional accommodation in hostels, apartments or villas nearby, we have improved and revised our private accommodation system from last year and this year have found a great range of affordable accommodation for those who don’t wish to camp. Full accommodation options will be available to book shortly.

TRAVEL

The Festival takes place just outside Pula, and generally people fly into one of the airports located within the region or take the return bus packages we run from across the UK. Full travel & transfer details will be available soon.

By Air

Budget airlines fly into many of the airports close by to the festival site and you can pick up a return flight for as little £100. The nearest airports to the festival site are Pula (20 minutes), Ljubljana (1.5 hrs), Trieste (2 hrs), Zagreb (3 hrs), Venice (4 hrs). Flights are available from throughout Europe into these airports, for full details we recommend using www.skyscanner.net to check on routing and availability.

Airport Transfers
We will be running daily transfers from these airports to the site on the days running up to the festival and on the days following the festival. Full details will be available soon.

By Bus

If traveling from the UK the most eco-friendly way to travel is by our very own Sunshine Bus. Experience a drive through Europe with a bus full of like minded people all on their way to enjoy the festival.

By Rail

You can travel by Eurostar to Northern Italy and then take a train through Slovenia into Croatia, although we advise that buses in Croatia are much quicker than the trains.
